I wrote this book because I want you to enjoy a long and healthy life
I have run regularly since 1974. Over the years I have run the equivalent of more than ten thousand 10k races. From my own running experience, and reading tons of medical research into the benefits of regular exercise, I have learned:

- While I like to run for exercise, swimming, cycling, rowing, walking, aerobic classes and many team sports are also great forms of exercise
- The World Health Organizations recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical exercise throughout the week, however, studies suggest any amount of regular exercise is better than nothing
- Other studies tell us it is never too late in life to start a routine of regular exercise suitable for one's age and condition
- Your risks for developing a range of debilitating conditions including cardiovascular disease, some forms of cancer and Type Two diabetes are significantly reduced
- As a result your prospects for living a longer health span, and potentially a longer lifespan, are enhanced
- Psychological benefits of regular exercise can include reduced levels of stress, better sleep and improved self-confidence

ABOUT running for your life
The running boom that started in the 1970s saw millions of people begin to experience the benefits of improved physical fitness, sound sleep and a sense of mental wellbeing. The following decade saw an explosion of interest in big city marathons from New York to Tokyo, now major events in cities all around the world.
Extensive findings over the past two decades confirm that running throughout one’s life can significantly reduce the risk of developing a range of debilitating conditions. Such activity leads to enhanced prospects of living a longer and healthier disease-free life.
Over nearly 50 years, Rob Fryer has run the equivalent of two and a half times around the globe, including 120 marathons and ultramarathons plus hundreds of shorter distance races. Running For Your Life weaves together learnings from medical research with tales from the author's own experience on the roads and trails. What to wear, how to prepare, how to run safely, how to reduce the risk of injury, and what runners can expect as one ages are just some of the topics explored.
Rob grew up and started running in South Africa and includes an interesting chapter on the country’s journey to democracy. He subsequently spent many years in Europe and now lives and runs in Connecticut, USA. He has run on every continent except Antarctica.

SOME MORE ABOUT ME
Yes, that is me, in the photo at the top of the page, in my backyard in beautiful Connecticut. I love the outdoors, including doing chores in the yard. As a long-distance runner, I having run 76 marathons (with a best time of 2hours 44 minutes) and 44 “ultra-marathons” of longer than the marathon distance, including the famous 90k (56-mile) Comrades Marathon in South Africa 13 times. I also enjoy swimming in the summer and skiing in the winter and play mediocre tennis and golf. Hiking is another passion, whether that means a one hour outing at a local nature preserve, or climbing to the top of Mount Whitney, highest peak in the contiguous United States, which I did with my son Stephen last summer..
